COMING SOON: CHICK FLIX

Jennifer L. Knox is curating this round.

Updated call for essays:

The subject, Chick Flix, is wide open. You can take it from a Gone with the Wind angle, to Gaslight, to Gas, Food & Lodging, to Gidget (me), to The Good Girl, through Gena Rowlands and out the other side of Looking for Mr. Goodbar. I was going to declare one chick per flick, but if two people cover Heathers or Pretty Woman, it’s not going to retread any ground. Nevertheless, I'll be posting a sign up sheet soon.

You can write a 50 word punch in the face, or a 5,000 scholarly treatise. That's why there are scroll bars. Just don’t be a bore.

The deadline is December 1.

Essays should be uploaded to Google Drive and shared with delirioushem1 [at] gmail [dot] com (preferred), or emailed as a .doc or .rtf to that address.

Please include links to film stills, YouTube clips, or other illustrations/supporting materials you'd like to appear with your piece.

Direct questions Jennifer or to delirioushem1 [at] gmail [dot] com.

There seem to be two competing, sometimes contradictory, definitions of "chick flick" in play here: 1) movies marketed to women on the basis of their perceived interest in idealized conceptions of romance, family, sentiment, shopping, etc., as in Sleepless in Seattle, Fried Green Tomatoes, Beaches, The Devil Wears Prada et al.; 2) movies in which women fight back, kick ass, or otherwise rule, as in Aliens, Thelma & Louise, Slumber Party Massacre, etc. Obviously these can overlap, but usually when I hear "chick flick" it seems to refer to the former. Now that I've said all this, I'm not sure what my point is. But I'll add a few of my own favorites: Mean Girls, Working Girl (not to mention Lizzie Borden's far superior Working Girls, a chick flick in a very different way), Clueless, Bring It On, Sleeping with the Enemy, Mr. Wrong, and the sublime Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion.

Exactly.

The list of flicks is growing and morphing in really interesting ways already (as is the list of wanna-contributors). Jen's left it completely open as far as how "chick flick" gets interpreted and completely open as to who participates.

So...flick 'em if you got 'em.

I think the deadline is November 15 but we still got work out how to gather submissions. Updates TK.
